  1. ABOUT BBEdit Lite

  4. BBEdit Lite is an evolution of BBEdit 2.2, the popular freeware text editor.
  5. BBEdit Lite offers the same overall performance and ease of use as BBEdit 2.2,
  6. but offers the following improvements:
  7.  
  8.     -    linefeed translation for DOS files is much faster;
  9.     
  10.     -    Zap Gremlins is much faster;
  11.     
  12.     -    an Unwrap command is now available for unwrapping text for
  13.         export to word processors;
  14.     
  15.     -    Entab and Detab have been improved;
  16.     
  17.     -    Upper Case and Lower Case have been replaced with a general-
  18.         purpose Change Case;
  19.         
  20.     -    compatibility with Macintosh Unix systems such as A/UX and MachTen is 
  21.         improved;
  22.         
  23.     -    BBEdit Lite is approximately 20% smaller on disk than BBEdit 2.2.

  25. To better serve the needs of freeware BBEdit users, and to reduce the
  26. size and complexity of the program, several features which are technically
  27. interesting but not of general interest to those users have been removed.

  29. BBEdit Lite is shipped with a QuickStart document which describes many of the
  30. application's features. Full documentation, as well as a considerable amount of
  31. additional functionality, is available with the purchase of BBEdit 2.5. See
  32. the document "BBEdit 2.5 Information" for details.

  35. address below. If you are sending your request via U.S. Mail, include
  36. a floppy disk and return postage. The reply package will include
  37. source for the extensions supplied with BBEdit Lite, and documentation
  38. on how to write your own extensions. The extension developer's kit is
  39. also available for anonymous FTP from world.std.com, in /ftp/pub/bbedit,
  40. and from sumex.stanford.edu, in /info-mac/text.

  45. BBEdit 2.5 is an industrial-strength text editor for use by software developers,
  46. engineers, scientists, telecommunications users, and anyone else who needs to
  47. view, edit and manipulate plain-text documents with maximum flexibility and
  48. performance. BBEdit 2.5 is an ideal companion for THINK C, THINK Pascal, MPW,
  49. and THINK Reference users. With BBEdit 2.5, you can:

  51.     -    Browse source files in THINK C and THINK Pascal project documents;

  88. Feature Overview

  91. BBEdit Lite offers the following useful functionality:
  92.  
  93. Ñ    Stationery documents. You can create a stationery document with BBEdit;
  94. whenever you open that document with BBEdit, its contents, format information,
  95. and window position will be used to create a new untitled window. You can also
  96. create a ╥global╙ stationery document which will be used as a template for all
  97. new windows.
  98.  
  99. Ñ    Open Several. This variation on the standard ╥Open╔╙ command enables you to
  100. open multiple files at once from multiple locations in the file system. You can
  101. also specify aliases to files, and those aliases will be resolved all at once.
  102.  
  103. Ñ    Powerful multi-file search. BBEdit offers the usual multi-file search, in
  104. which a disk directory is scanned and the files are opened one at a time;
  105. however, BBEdit can also display the search results in a window for easy browsing
  106. (and selected entries in the window can be opened for display). The search can
  107. also be limited to files that are already opened for editing in BBEdit, or to
  108. files which were already found in a previous multi-file search. BBEdit also
  109. offers multi-file replace capability for automated ╥search and destroy╙
  110. operations.

  112. Ñ    Zero cost. BBEdit Lite is free, with no qualification. It╒s not shareware,
  113. and it╒s not commercial.

  115. BBEdit Lite also offers the following :

  117. Ñ    High quality. BBEdit Lite has achieved a remarkable level of stability for
  118. freeware; it has received years of in-house and external testing. The user
  119. interface is the result of extensive user feedback and polishing. This commitment
  120. to quality is further reflected in the commercial version of BBEdit.

  122. Ñ    File size limited only by available memory. BBEdit Lite's default partition
  123. size is 512K of RAM. This can be set as low as 300K, to make BBEdit Lite the
  124. ideal constantly-resident editor for small to moderate tasks, or turned up as
  125. high as necessary to edit many large files or perform large-scale
  126. search-and-replace operations. If you╒re running under System 7.0, BBEdit Lite
  127. automatically takes advantage of available system memory, so that you don╒t have
  128. to adjust its partition size to edit large files.

  130. Ñ    No hard limit on number of files open. The number of files that BBEdit Lite
  131. can have open at once is limited by available memory, and can be increased or
  132. decreased by adjusting  BBEdit Lite's partition size as appropriate.

  134. Ñ    Easy manipulation of multiple files at once. The "Open Several╔" command
  135. makes it possible to open multiple files from different folders at once, and the
  136. Save and Print commands can operate on all open files at once.

  138. Ñ    Pattern (╥grep╙) searching. Matching patterns can be constructed so that
  139. strings other than exact literal matches can be found and replaced; for example,
  140. converting Pascal comments to C comments, or converting C++ comments to C
  141. comments.

  143. Ñ    System 7 awareness. Besides supporting all of the basic System 7
  144. functionality such as 32-bit mode, virtual memory, and the like, BBEdit also
  145. takes advantage of specific System 7 functionality wherever possible in order to
  146. either improve performance or to improve its appearance. This is done without
  147. sacrificing System 6 compatibility. BBEdit Lite also includes help balloons for
  148. most of its menus and dialogs. Some of BBEdit Lite╒s advanced features require
  149. System 7.

  159. BBEdit Lite is a freely distributable, copyrighted program, otherwise
  160. known as "freeware". There is no registration process, no fee requested
  161. or required, no obligation on your part, and no guilt.

  163. We at Bare Bones Software do not subscribe to the concept of "shareware"; it has
  164. been our direct experience that many people simply ignore shareware notices. The
  165. cost of goods related to distributing BBEdit Lite is very low, and can be
  166. recouped by means other than (unsuccessfully) trying to shame users into paying
  167. some small amount of money for a program.

  169. We believe that when users of a program make the financial sacrifice to obtain a
  170. piece of software, they should expect, and receive, significant value added.
  171. This is why BBEdit 2.5 exists.

  174. you to order your own copy of BBEdit 2.5. See "BBEdit General Information" for

  186. other product, without my express written permission.
